A few
Mochi families had arrived in Ontario in the seventies looking to
improve the quality of life for themselves and their children. They
came mainly from UK and Africa. As the numbers grew, the idea of
creating a group was born.
Manikant Chauhan, Harshad Chauhan, Late Harish Parmar, Babubhai Chauhan,
Subhash Chauhan, Dhansukh Chauhan are the founding members of MGM;
who had a dream to create a samaj that would provide a solid
platform for our own group of people, a generation of baby boomers
and their children alike. As immigration became most active in
eighties and nineties, MGM grew in membership. Slowly some of the
events like picnic and Diwali show became so popular that they were
scheduled as regular annual events. The original MGM constitution
was created in May 1983. It has been since amended as required from
time to time to enhance the value added benefits for the members.
MGM had established its grass root mission right from the beginning,
which encouraged existing members to participate in the events and
newcomers to come forward and join the group.
In 2004,
Mahila Mandal was born, the brainchild of Anupama Parmar, one of our
past MGM presidents. She created and inducted Mahila mandal as part
of the MGM, giving the ladies of the mandal the platform to discuss
and action their own social and cultural values.
Our MGM
mandate has been to maintain our traditional Hindu culture and
cultural values, to cultivate cohesiveness among members and enhance
the togetherness within our group. MGM, as it stands today has been
successful in bringing its members together and sharing the benefits
of our rich heritage which stems from the state of Gujarat in India
where our forefathers originally came from.
Our
regular programmes include ice skating, bowling, Samuh yagna,
Picnic, navratri and our most popular Diwali programme. We recognise
the fact that our children need encouragement in higher education so
they are recognised by MGM at the Diwali program for their
achievement. The children and the adults are also recognised for
their achievement in cultural programmes like folk dances, garba,
modern movie dances, short play, etc. For the past few years we have
been active in organizing different donation drives that has enabled
MGM to help needy and poor people in India. This include old peoples
home, School for Mute and deaf children, Flood relief, group
marriage etc. For the past two years, education fund has been set up
through our main parishad in India (SVJKMGP) to help needy children.
MGM is committed to continue this drive in the future as part of its
core value of sharing.
MGM is a
voluntary organisation and runs solely by the volunteers. Its
managing committee (elected every two years) hold a regular meeting
and make decisions that are fair and beneficial for all member
families. Volunteers are the backbone of MGM, without them the group
would not be able to function. We encourage our members to come
forward and give their support in all different events and
activities.
