Mahila Mandal gathering - Report
Saturday, February 13, 2010

By: Jayshree Solanki

This event was held at Prafula and Rameshbhai Parmar’s home on February 13th 2010 at 4.00pm. There was an excellent turnout of 49 ladies ranging from 8-65 years of age who mingled while snacks were served, such as Khaman Dhokla, Bhel with Hot Tea and Soft drinks. Hanuman Chalisha was recited followed by one minute silence for our dearly departed community members.
Tejal Chauhan of Brampton, who is a Pharmacist by profession gave a detailed presentation on Menopause and Osteoporosis. It was very informative as most women in our community are not familiar with remedies and preventative measures. There was also a package provided with leaflets and pens. A presentation on Maha Shivratri was done by Krishna Merchant, our MGM recording secretary, who explained the meaning of this auspicious day which was well received by our younger generation. There were questions from the youths, as they have very little understanding of many cultural days. Lastly we had an open forum discussion on cultural, social interaction, peer pressures and parent pressures encountered by our young girls in Canada. In a multicultural environment, we had some interesting ideas that emerged.
Everyone seemed to have enjoyed the gathering and we dispersed, feeling good about the time shared together.§
